Freedom of Information Act- Requesting Public Records

Per the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (5 ILCS 140), public entities are required to present records to the public upon written request. However, some documents are not of public domain per 5 ILCS 140, Section (1) (a), including restrictions imposed through state and judicial mandates.


To request public records from Edwardsville Township, please submit in writing a letter detailing the documents you wish to receive, The letter should be set to our FOIA Officer via email, fax, or mail. Please select the Supervisor’s Office or Assessor’s Office to download the FOIA request form, or you can pick up a copy in our office. Responses to Requests for Records Not Sought for a Commercial Purpose

Pursuant to 5 ILCS 140/4, the Township will respond to a FOIA request not sought for a commercial purpose within five (5) business days from the day after the Township receives the request.

Responses to Request for Records Sought for a Commercial Purpose

Pursuant to 5 ILC 140/5, a commercial request is when the requester seeks to use part or all of the public records for sale, resale, or solicitation or advertisement for sales or services. Requests by the news media, not-for-profit organizations, scientific or academic institutions are not considered information requests. A response shall be given within twenty-one (21) business days from receipt of a written request for records for a commercial purpose.

Business Day Definition

Business days are defined as regular day of the week (Monday through Friday) when the Township is open. Saturdays, Sundays, and legal holidays are not business days and cannot be counted in the five (5), or twenty-one (21) business day time period. Day one (1) of the timeline is the first business day after the request is received by the Township. Any FOIA request received by the Township after normal business hours (8:30AM-4:30PM, Monday through Friday) shall be considered received on the following business day. If a FOIA request sent by e-mail appears in the recipient’s mailbox during the normal business hours, it is received on that day. If it is emailed after business hours, including on a weekend or legal holiday, it is “received” on the following business day.

First fifty (50) pages are free (Black & White)

Additional black and white prints are fifteen ($0.15). thirty-nine ($0.39) for color prints.
