Park History

Township Community Park, also known as Supervisor Robert C. Stille Edwardsville Township Airplane Community Park, named in Supervisor Robert Stille’s honor upon his death. Township Park has been open to the public for more than three decades and is located at 6368 Center Grove Road, Edwardsville, Illinois 62025.

The first clearing began for the park in April 1977, and the first phase was formally dedicated on July 13, 1980. With grant funds from the State of Illinois and the United States Land and Water Conservation program, Edwardsville Township acquired 27.45 acres of land, which was named Edwardsville Township Park. The park project was undertaken following community support from various civic organizations and other groups and with the leadership of then Supervisor Robert Stille.

The first phase was the acquisition and development of ten (10) acres. Grant funds were not available for complete development, however, the Township received $20,000 toward acquisition costs. The initial park included six small shelters with picnic tables, barbecue grills, horseshoe pits, a large open space area, a rest room, two small swings, a tot play area, and a commemorative flagpole which was funded by local community groups.

The development of the other seven (7) acres that sit in front of Center Grove Road included creating a larger playground, adding tennis courts, skating rink, a soccer field, a rest room and a larger community shelter to accommodate 160 people. The large community shelter is distinguished by two farm silos on either side of the shelter which were repaired for use as park storage.
